MEET THE HOST FARM
Frido and Sonja Verpaalen are the proud owners of Old Tree Farms in Volga, SD. They have 4 children: Francine (24), Jolein (22), Luka (20) and Sem (18). In November 2001 they moved from the Netherlands from the Old Tree Road, bought 50 acres of land with permits to build a dairy. In April 2002 they started milking at their new facility. Since then, Old Tree Farms has expanded many times and today, they are milking 1600 cows. The cows are milked 3 times a day in an H-shape facility with freestalls and recycled bedding. The dairy is raising most of their own crops (corn and alfalfa) and harvests with their own equipment. In the fall of 2016, they started raising their own heifer-calves, starting them in hutches and moving them into larger groups up to the age of 6 months, where the youngstock will be raised further in Wynot, Nebraska to return when they are pregnant. The latest addition at the farm is a calf barn with 80 individual pens to keep the young calves comfortable during the cold and snowy conditions in the winter.
Frido and Sonja take much pride in keeping their farm clean and tidy. Comfort is important: happy, healthy cows will produce wholesome milk.

SDSU DAVIS DAIRY PLANT!
WHY TAKE THE TOUR?
South Dakota State University has offered Dairy Science programs since the beginnings of the university and its dairy plant has been the basis of its teaching and research programs. In 2011 SDSU was excited to open its doors to the state-of-the-art Davis Dairy Plant. This $9.3 million facility was made possible through funds from the dairy industry, dairy farmers, alumni and friends and includes a renovation of the old plant and 10,000 square feet addition. This plant is designed to offer hands-on experience to Dairy and Food Science students at SDSU.
